Story:
A card is chosen and lost. The magician takes 10 cards from the deck; by “chance,” the chosen card is among those 10 cards. But when he shows them again, there are only 9 left, the chosen card has disappeared from the deck... and is found face up among the rest of the deck, which is face down.
